Writer's Conference 2023
Paris, France

In July 2023, we welcomed 24 writers and faculty to Paris for a week of workshops, cultural excursions, and fellowship in honor of James Baldwin's literary legacy. We listened to each other's own work, while reflecting on the bigger context of social justice that was surrounding us amidst the murder of Nahel M. by the police. We experienced Paris through the eyes and wisdom of Black American ex pats who have made a home here. It was a transformative and nurturing week during which we reclaimed La Maison Baldwin's story.

“My time in France with La Maison Baldwin opened up a Renaissance within myself, a true rebirth of my creativity that is not confined to protest poetry. Through community, exploration of the physical space our artistic ancestors traversed, and balance between rest and productivity I was able to reconnect with my passion for writing that is informed by a wide range of emotion and human experiences.”

Samuel Girma, Stockholm

Jimmy once said: "The world is held together, really it is held together, by the love and the passion of a very few people.”- That is what La Maison Baldwin does, cultivate people who dare to love, think and write in the foot-steps of Baldwin. LMB’s commitment to allow future generations to see themselves as witnesses of their contemporary is the true meaning of honoring Baldwin’s legacy.

The Paris Writer’s Workshop was revelatory and singular. From writing in spaces owned and inhabited by the likes of James Baldwin, Josephine Baker and Martin Luther King Jr., to forming community with brilliant minds from around the world who gathered in the spirit of Baldwin, there was no aspect of the experience that failed to be spectacular. I came out of the workshops a better writer, thinker, and individual. I am so grateful to have attended!
